Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in New Delhi on Sunday (March 1, 2026) for a high-stakes visit aimed at resetting India-Canada ties — relations that had hit rock-bottom under former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, who alleged Indian government involvement in the killing of a pro-Khalistan separatist figure. India had firmly rejected these allegations as “absurd” and “politically motivated.” Carney’s visit marks the most significant diplomatic reset between the two countries in nearly two-and-a-half years.

India and Canada share deep historical, cultural, and trade ties. Canada is home to a large Indian diaspora, particularly from Punjab. However, bilateral relations deteriorated sharply in late 2023 when Trudeau made allegations linking Indian government officials to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and designated terrorist under Indian law.

India denied the allegations, expelled a Canadian diplomat, and suspended visa services temporarily. The relationship remained strained through most of 2024 and early 2025. Mark Carney, who succeeded Trudeau as Canada’s PM, has taken a pragmatic approach to restoring ties with India — a strategically and economically vital partner.

The visit was described by the Ministry of External Affairs as presenting “a substantive agenda.” Key areas covered include:

• Energy: India and Canada are expected to sign a 10-year, US $2 billion uranium supply deal — critical for India’s nuclear energy programme. Smaller agreements on oil and gas were also discussed.
• Technology: Agreements on AI and quantum computing are on the agenda.
• Education & Culture: People-to-people ties, student exchanges, and cultural cooperation.
• Trade & Investment: India-Canada CEOs Forum was scheduled, exploring business partnerships.
• Critical Minerals: Canada, rich in minerals essential for clean energy, and India, a major manufacturing hub, are natural partners.

Both leaders were also scheduled to attend the India-Canada CEOs Forum and exchange views on regional and global developments.

This visit was preceded by earlier meetings between Indian and Canadian leadership:

• Kananaskis, Canada (June 2025) — Carney and Modi met at the G7 summit.
• Johannesburg, South Africa (November 2025) — A bilateral meeting on the sidelines of an international forum.

India and Canada have a Strategic Partnership — a framework for cooperation across multiple pillars including trade and investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, innovation, and people-to-people ties. Carney noted on X: “There’s a rapidly growing demand across India for more energy, technology, and services — exactly what Canada has to offer.”
