Updated 23 October 2026.
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) is the section many CAT aspirants find hardest to plan for, because the sets change shape from paper to paper. With CAT 2026 on 29 November 2026, this guide focuses on the one thing you can control in the weeks left: how you choose sets and how you spend the section’s time.
A note on facts: the official CAT 2026 notice does not set out the number of DILR questions, the section timing or the marking scheme. Check those on iimcat.ac.in and practise on mocks that follow the official format. The strategy below works in proportions of whatever time the section allows, so it does not depend on those numbers.
Why selection matters more than speed in DILR
A DILR section is a handful of sets, and each set is a small investment decision: some sets open up after two or three inferences, others stay locked however long you stare at them. Most marks in DILR are lost not to slow solving but to time sunk into the wrong set. A good DILR attempt is usually a few sets solved carefully rather than every set touched.
The three-stage map
Stage 1 β Triage (the first few minutes)
Scan every set before solving anything. For each, ask: can I see two usable inferences within a minute?
- Yes β mark it as an attack set.
- No β mark it as a return-later set.
Finish the triage with a short ranked list of attack sets. Do not start a set just because it appears first.
Stage 2 β Attack (most of the section)
Work through your attack sets one at a time. The opening move is always the same: read all the constraints, build the grid or table, and mark the forced entries β then read the first question.
Set yourself a cut-off per set. If you pass it without a clean breakthrough, lock in the answers you are sure of and move on. A set abandoned at the right moment costs less than one finished too late.
Stage 3 β Salvage (the last part of the section)
Return to the sets you skipped. Often one or two questions in a “hard” set can be answered from the first inference alone. Before guessing anything, check the official marking scheme on iimcat.ac.in for each question type, and decide your guessing policy in practice β not on the day.
Four common set types to drill
These are set types that come up often in CAT practice material. Drill them in this order:
1. Data tables with a reasoning layer
A partly filled table (sales, votes, schedules) where missing cells follow from constraints. Tip: compute row and column totals first β they often unlock the first questions.
2. Arrangements (linear and circular)
People around a table, books on a shelf, houses in a row. Tip: draw the layout, mark fixed positions clearly and shade “either/or” cells. Do not track positions in your head.
3. Games and tournaments
Round-robins, points tables, knock-out brackets. Tip: build the head-to-head matrix first, then convert each verbal clue into win/loss marks. Clues about “the team with the most wins” are usually the best entry point.
4. Routes and networks
City-to-city routes, pipelines, flow diagrams. Tip: list every path explicitly before computing anything. “Shortest route” questions often hide a path that does not look direct.
A five-week DILR drill to 29 November
- Week 1: one or two untimed sets of each type above; build a one-page method note per type.
- Week 2: timed sectional practice; practise the triage stage on every attempt.
- Week 3: full mocks plus targeted sets in your weakest type.
- Week 4: mixed timed sets; review every abandoned set β was abandoning it the right call?
- Week 5: light practice only, a few sets a day to stay sharp.
Five DILR mistakes to avoid
- Starting the first set because it is first. Triage every time.
- Staying too long on one set. Respect your per-set cut-off.
- Skipping the constraint map. A minute spent on a grid saves several later.
- Guessing without knowing the marking rules. Check them on iimcat.ac.in first.
- Practising untimed for too long. In the final weeks, put the clock on.
Frequently asked questions
How many DILR sets should I attempt?
There is no fixed number. In mocks, track how many sets you attempted and your accuracy in each; aim to attempt more sets only while accuracy holds.
Is DILR more important than VARC or QA?
All three sections count, and each IIM sets its own admission criteria (the CAT 2026 notice says each IIM is independent in this). Prepare all three; give DILR extra practice if your mocks show it is your weakest.
What is the DILR section timing and marking scheme for CAT 2026?
The official CAT 2026 notice does not state them. Check iimcat.ac.in, and practise on mocks that follow the official format.
