Total 68 questions in 120 minutes (40 minutes per section, no movement between sections). Marking: +3 for correct MCQ, -1 for wrong MCQ, no negative marking for TITA (Type In The Answer) questions.
3. What is the eligibility for CAT?
For CAT: Bachelor's degree with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PWD) from a recognized university. Final-year graduation students can also apply. There is no age limit. Work experience is not mandatory but preferred by some IIMs (especially IIM Ahmedabad/Bangalore/Calcutta) during shortlisting.
4. What is a good CAT percentile for IIM?
For top IIMs (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta), you need 99+ percentile (overall) along with strong academics and work experience. For new IIMs (Trichy, Udaipur, Kashipur, Raipur, etc.), 95+ percentile may be sufficient. FMS Delhi typically requires 98.5+, MDI Gurgaon 95+, and IIFT Delhi 95+ percentile.
5. How to prepare for CAT in 6 months?
A 6-month CAT plan: Months 1-2 — strengthen fundamentals (Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry for QA; Grammar, Vocabulary for VARC; Sets, Puzzles for DILR); Months 3-4 — sectional tests, daily 2-3 RC passages, practice DI sets and LR puzzles; Months 5-6 — full-length mock tests weekly (target 25+ mocks), analyze each mock thoroughly, work on weak areas. IPMAT is for Class 12 students seeking 5-year Integrated Programme in Management at IIM Indore, Rohtak, Ranchi, etc. CAT has 3 sections (VARC, DILR, QA); IPMAT has 2 sections (Quant, Verbal). CAT is significantly harder due to higher difficulty and stiffer competition.

All 20 IIMs accept CAT scores for MBA/PGP admissions: IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore (PGP), IIM Kozhikode, IIM Shillong, IIM Trichy, IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Rohtak (PGP), IIM Ranchi (PGP), IIM Raipur, IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Nagpur, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Visakhapatnam, IIM Jammu. CAT 2026 application fee is approximately ₹2,500 for General/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates and ₹1,250 for SC/ST/PWD candidates. Payment is online only via credit card, debit card, net banking, or UPI. Late fees apply for extended registration. The fee is non-refundable.

11. Is CAT tougher than UPSC?
CAT and UPSC are fundamentally different exams. CAT tests aptitude (Quant, Verbal, DI-LR) in 120 minutes — speed and accuracy matter most. UPSC tests deep knowledge across multiple subjects over a year-long process (Prelims + Mains + Interview). UPSC has a lower success rate (~0.2% vs CAT's 1-2% for IIM seats) but is fundamentally a different skill set. Most agree UPSC is harder due to syllabus vastness.
12. Can I crack CAT without coaching?
Yes, many CAT toppers (including 100 percentilers) have qualified through self-study using Arun Sharma's books for QA/DILR/VARC, daily mocks, and previous year papers. However, structured coaching with peer competition and expert mentoring helps most aspirants. CAT Gurukul offers affordable online prep starting at ₹999/year as an alternative to ₹50,000+ traditional coaching.
13. What are the best books for CAT preparation?
Best books for CAT: Quant — Arun Sharma (How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude); Verbal — Arun Sharma (How to Prepare for VARC) + Word Power Made Easy; DI-LR — Arun Sharma (How to Prepare for DILR) + Nishit Sinha; Mocks — IMS, T.I.M.E., CL Mocks or CAT Gurukul AI-mocks. Solve last 15 years' CAT papers (officially released till 2017, simulated thereafter).
