CLAT GK + ART & CULTURE | Hindustani Gharanas | Sangeet Natak Akademi
The 13th edition of the Sur Jyotsna National Music Awards 2026 — hosted by the Lokmat Media Group at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi — honoured Hindustani classical vocalists Sumitra Guha and Pandit Laxman Krishnarao Pandit for lifetime contribution to Indian classical music. Instituted in memory of Jyotsna Darda (founder of Lokmat’s Sakhi Manch and a noted patron of the arts), the awards have over thirteen years built a reputation for celebrating both classical lineage and contemporary excellence. The 2026 ceremony also featured an A-list cultural panel — former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan were in attendance, with playback singer Kailash Kher headlining the live performances and Supreme Court Judge Justice Sandeep Mehta presenting the awards.
Background
Sumitra Guha is a Padma Bhushan-honoured Hindustani vocalist trained in the Kirana gharana (founded by Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, characterised by slow, devotional alaap) with deep grounding in Carnatic traditions — making her one of the rare bi-stylistic classical artists in India. Pandit Laxman Krishnarao Pandit is a senior torchbearer of the Gwalior gharana — the oldest Hindustani khayal gharana, dating to the early 19th century under Hassu, Haddu and Nathu Khan. The Sur Jyotsna Awards, instituted in 2014, have honoured legends including Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pt. Jasraj and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan over its run.

CLAT Relevance
- Hindustani gharanas to memorise (6 major khayal): Gwalior (oldest), Agra, Jaipur-Atrauli, Kirana, Patiala, Bhendibazaar. CLAT routinely tests gharana–founder pairings.
- Gharana mnemonic: “GA-JA-KI-PA-BHE” (with Gwalior as the eldest sibling) — Gwalior, Agra, Jaipur, Kirana, Patiala, Bhendibazaar.
- Trap: Sangeet Natak Akademi Award is NOT a Padma honour — it is a separate Akademi-level state honour (highest in performing arts).
- Cross-link: Article 51A(f) + Article 49 + Article 29 = the “culture trinity” routinely tested as a passage cluster.
- Personality recall: Sumitra Guha = Padma Bhushan, bi-stylistic (Hindustani + Carnatic). Pt. Laxman Krishnarao Pandit = Gwalior gharana doyen.
- UNESCO ICH list — Indian inscriptions to know: Kutiyattam, Vedic Chanting, Ramlila, Ramman, Mudiyettu, Kalbelia, Chhau, Buddhist chanting of Ladakh, Sankirtana, Yoga, Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja in Kolkata, Garba of Gujarat — among the 15.
